Snow Chains for All-Terrain Vehicles
If you are using
your all-terrain vehicle in snow- covered or
mountainous regions, snow chains provide extra
control, allowing for safer operation of your
all-terrain vehicle.
Snow chains provide added
traction for winter driving. Snow chains are
designed to increase traction for your
all-season tires, and are especially helpful for
driving on snow and ice. If you are using your
all-terrain vehicle in snow- covered or
mountainous regions, snow chains provide extra
control, allowing for safer operation of your
all-terrain vehicle.
Snow chains should be installed on the drive
wheels. If your all-terrain vehicle is 4 wheel
drive, then snow chains should be installed on
all four wheels. This is to maintain a balanced
level of control.
It is important to find snow chains that are
sized properly for your tires. Today most tire
sizes are standardized, so finding snow chains
for your specific requirements should not be
difficult, especially if you go to a dealership
or to a reputable sports vehicle sales center.
When sizing, make sure the snow chains fit over
the tire in a fully inflated state. Do not
deflate the tire to make it small enough to fit
inside a show chain apparatus. Driving on an
improperly inflated tire could damage it, or
cause your vehicle to malfunction.
It is a good idea to make sure your snow chains
will fit before you actually need them. For
example, practice installing them in the summer
when it is warm and there is no snow, so you can
become comfortable with the installation
process, and so you have enough time to make
adjustments if you purchased the wrong size of
snow chains.
After the snow chains are installed, but before
you drive the all-terrain vehicle, inspect the
chains to make sure they are still seated
properly on the tire. Also look for any broken
segments. If a cross chain, or any component of
the snow chain is broken, do not use it. Repair
or replace the broken snow chain before driving
on it again.
Consider this too, when purchasing snow chains,
there are a variety of chain patterns to choose
from. A popular style is the diamond fitting
chain. Also look for snow chains that are
reversible. This allows you to install them on
the other side of the vehicle so that they can
wear equally.
Not all snow chains are legal for use in all
areas. Check with your local regulatory
authority before investing in snow chains for
your regular or all-terrain vehicle.
