How To Drive With Snow Chains

There are some people who enjoy driving in the snow. However, for those who hate driving in the snow, it can be very stressful.

Snow chains will help to improve the traction on your vehicle and if you have to be out on treacherous roads, you will feel much safer with them installed on your tires. One does need to be cautious when driving with snow chains and the following information will be helpful to you if you need to drive in winter conditions.

The most important thing to be careful of when driving with snow chains is your speed. When you have snow chains on your vehicle, you should make sure that your speed is relatively slow and generally, you should not exceed the speed of thirty miles per hour. If you drive too fast, you are not just risking damaging your chains and tires, but you are risking going off the road, as well. Regardless of the increased traction, snow chains will not keep you from getting into an accident if you are going too fast in icy or snowy conditions.

Another thing to be careful of is spinning your tires when taking off. If a chain was to catch on a stump or rock that you didn’t see, you take the risk of breaking an axle on your vehicle. You should also make sure that you check for any damage to the chains when you take them off and before you put them on again. When checking them, you’ll want to look for any links that look worn or any connectors that may be stretched or worn. Keep them from getting rusted by apply some WD40 each time you have used them.

When you install snow chains on your vehicle, you’ll want to put them on all four tires. Many people only put them on two tires, either the front or the back, but the fact is you’ll get better steering performance if they are on all four. There is nothing worse then having the chains on the front of the vehicle, only to discover the back-end of your vehicle has no traction and it starts spinning around on you.

Driving with snow chains does not have to be difficult. The best thing to do is to practice using the snow chains in your snow covered driveway or on a snow covered back road. The snow chains are made to make your driving easier by giving you more traction. Just remember to take it slow and you will feel confident during snowy weather.
