The
Evolution of Snow Chains Over the Years
Snow chains for
tires have been around for a long time. However,
their effectiveness has not always been as high
as it is now.
Over the history of snow
chains, various designs have been created and
their usefulness in harsh weather conditions has
improved greatly.
In the early years, a “ladder” design was all
you could find in snow chains. Ladder style snow
chains are quite easy to produce, so they are
inexpensive to purchase. This type of snow chain
looks like a ladder attached in the center of
your tire tread. Ladder snow chains have pretty
much been taken out of circulation, as they do
not provide much traction on the sides of your
tires, which diminishes “side guiding”, and they
have a possibility of slipping. Today, they are
only available for specialized use.
Now, snow chains can be found in various
patterns for use on your personal vehicles. The
two most prevalent patterns available in snow
chains are the “Y” pattern and the “diamond”
pattern.
“Y” pattern snow chains: These snow chains are
very effective in harsh winter conditions. When
placed on your tire, it looks like there are
sideways y’s all the way around it. They can be
easily installed on tires in a relatively short
amount of time. Due to the lower amount of
actual chain found on this pattern, “Y” pattern
snow chains are the cheaper of the two prevalent
pattern options.
“Diamond” pattern snow chains: These snow chains
are also very effective in harsh winter
conditions. When placed on your tire, you will
see a diamond shape of chain all the way around
it. They can be easily installed on tires in a
relatively short amount of time. This pattern
has more chain in its design, so it can cost
more than the “Y” pattern snow chains.
As with any new car accessory your purchase, you
should always practice installing your snow
chains before driving in snowy conditions. It is
beneficial to learn how to install the chains
before you are forced to put them on during a
blizzard!
