Snow Chains FAQ

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions and their answers regarding snow chains and snow tires.

Can I purchase snow chains for my vehicle?
Yes, but you should check your manufacturer’s instructions before doing so.

This tire size has specific instructions from the manufacturer, what is that?
Snow chains may cause serious clearance problems on certain vehicles. Check the vehicle manufacturer information to verify whether you can utilize snow chains safely or not.

Will I have to jack up my vehicle to put snow chains on?
No, most chains can be installed without jacking up your car. You simply lay them out and drive onto them, and then attach them around your tires.

When I purchase snow chains, how many are in a box?
There are usually two chains in a box—you usually only need one chain on each of the driving wheels.

Is putting chains on difficult?
Not really, but it is recommended that you do a ‘dry run’ with them before you need them. This will help you learn how to install them properly and confirm that they are the right chains for your vehicle.

What else should I carry with my snow chains?
You should carry a pair of gloves, a flashlight and an old mat with your chains. Murphy’s law says it will be dark when you need to install your chains on the highway. The gloves will help protect your hands from freezing to the metal and the mat will help keep your knees dry while you are installing the chains.

There are no chains available for my vehicle—why?
If your vehicle has sports tires, the vehicle will bottom out with chains and damage the undercarriage and suspension struts. You may also damage the steering linkage.

I have sports wheels—what can I do?
Replace your tires for the winter season with radial tires that you can put snow chains on.

Can I modify chains to fit a different wheel size?
This is not recommended—it could cause injury, damage to your vehicle, or possibly a motor vehicle collision if the chains do not fit properly.
