Know Your Local Snow Chain Laws

Before you use your snow chains, you should know the laws regarding them.

Snow chains are the chains people put on their tires during snowy road conditions in order to get better traction. There are many styles, types, and sizes of snow chains, and anyone who lives where road conditions can get treacherous should own snow chains for their tires. Unfortunately, having the snow chains is not enough. Before you use your snow chains, you should know the laws regarding them. The following paragraphs will discuss some of the different laws regarding the use of snow chains.

Laws regarding the use of snow chains vary from state to state, and sometimes from county to county. But most all states have a law against driving on clear roads with snow chains on your tires. It is prohibited in most states, and can result in a misdemeanor charge, as well as a fine. Snow chains can damage the asphalt, and help develop pot holes in the road, thus the law. Some find it inconvenient to remove and reinstall their snow chains each time roads conditions change, but it is better than being fined, or getting stuck in the snow.

In some states, the law will require the use of snow chains when traveling on predetermined roads. These are normally rural roads that seldom get plowed during winter storm conditions. Vehicles that try to travel these roads without snow chains on their tires, including vehicles with four wheel drive, are known to get stuck. These are normally roads in remote areas, that are not highly traveled. To prevent unnecessary death and injury, the law was enacted to mandate the use of snow chains when traveling several rural roads during snowy conditions all over the United States.

Since the laws associated with snow chains in each state vary, it is always best to read through the laws of your own particular state. These can be found at any local library, or by searching them on the internet.
