Mountain Driving and Tire Chains
Driving in the
mountains can be unpredictable; you never know
when you’re likely to run into a snowstorm.
In states like Colorado
and Montana, you may even run into a storm in
June. Having a good set of tire chains can mean
the difference between getting stuck in the
middle of nowhere or making a safe passage. In
fact, while traveling in the mountains you may
encounter a chain law, particularly in winter
months. Under these conditions the highway
patrol won’t let you continue on your journey
without proper chains. You may well find
yourself stranded miles from the nearest town.
In the Rockies weather can go from moderate or
mild to whiteout conditions in a matter of a few
miles.
Being prepared
This unpredictable pattern of weather means that
you may be blindsided by a storm and should be
prepared. Many long-term residents of
mountainous regions carry a set of chains as
part of their winter routine. In addition these
travelers generally carry flashlights,
batteries, water, blankets and emergency flairs.
Though all this preparation may seem dramatic
and unnecessary for motorists unfamiliar with
mountain driving, it is often better safe than
sorry on a mountain excursion.
Choosing the right set of chains
Choosing a good set of chains is often a matter
of preference. For example, cable type chains
are practical because they are easier to put on
than the bulky chain type. However, some
mountain drivers prefer heavy-duty chains for
deeper snow. Some chain are equipped with bars
that are particularly effective for icy
conditions. Additionally some chains features
studs that are effective in deep snow and on
ice.
If you’ve never used tire chains, it’s a good
idea to do a few practice runs before you head
off to the mountains. Find a level spot such as
a parking lot and practice putting your chains
on following manufacture recommendations.
A lot of mountain travelers put a pair of
coveralls in the trunk with the chains, that way
if you are caught in bad weather, you can slip
them on before laying in the snow putting on
your chains.
Mountain driving can be hazardous anytime of the
year, in particular during winter mid to late
fall and early spring. Having a good pair of
tire chains will make all the difference in the
world should extreme weather occur. Being
prepared will ease concerns and make the trip
safer and more enjoyable.
