Removing Snow Chains
When the snow and
ice begin to melt you need to know how to remove
your snow chains.
During bad weather, it may
be necessary to have snow chains put on your
vehicle in order to trudge through the ice and
snow. However, bad weather doesn’t last forever
and when the snow and ice begin to melt; it’s
time for your snow chains to go with it.
Do not, under any circumstances, drive with snow
chains on bare pavement. Doing so can cause
serious damage to your tires and your vehicle.
As soon as you no longer require the use of
chains, take them off of your tires. You will
also extend the life of your snow chains.
Removing snow chains is much easier than
installing them. You will essentially reverse
the order of installing them to take them off.
Firstly, choose a spot where you are visible to
other motorists. Choose a path where the road is
straight and as level as possible. Be sure to
apply your parking brake to avoid personal
injury. Vehicles may unexpectedly roll forward
or backward, especially on slick ice or packed
snow. Applying your parking brake will lessen
the chance of injuries. You should also wear
gloves—most chains are made out of metal, which
will be wet from treading on the snow and ice
and could potentially freeze to your skin.
Begin by unclipping the rubber loops. Remove the
chains from the tire and lay them flat and
straight on the ground. Get back into your car
and drive four or five feet until your tires are
completely clear of the chains.
Put the chains and loops back in their box. It
would be best to wipe them down so they are
dry—they could rust and cause damage to fabrics
if laid down while wet. Keeping your snow chains
in their box is not only a great storage
solution for your vehicle, but also helps to
protect the snow chains. By drying out the
chains as much as possible before putting them
away will help extend their life.
