Are Snow Chains a Good Thing or Just a False Sense of Security?

Too many people assume that if they have snow chains on their vehicles this means they can drive under even the worst of weather conditions.

There are plenty of people who ‘swear’ by snow chains for driving on snow, and ice-covered roadways. Rarely do you hear talk about the dangers that snow chains pose for those who mistake the ‘capabilities’ of snow chains for driving during hazardous winter conditions.

So are snow chains a ‘good’ thing or just a ‘false’ sense of security? The answer is both, if you don’t fully understand what snow chains can and cannot do, and when and how to use them.

Too many people assume that if they have snow chains on their vehicles this means they can drive under even the worst of weather conditions. Wrongly assuming that snow chains means ‘safety’ and ‘control’ for operating a vehicle in all winter conditions can lead to ‘tragic’ consequences. Avoid the pain and devastation caused by vehicle crashes in which serious injuries or loss of life results by following a few guidelines for winter driving with snow chains.

Make sure that the snow chains on your vehicle are installed correctly. Improperly installed snow chains can cause dangerous ‘wear’ and ‘weakening’ to the structures of your tires which could result in an unexpected “blow-out” and loss -of -control of your vehicle. If you don’t know how to properly install them yourself, have them professionally installed to avoid the damage to your tires which could lead to a serious accident.

Pay attention to weather and road condition reports. News stations usually provide regular updates on weather and road conditions for viewers and listeners via television and radio broadcasts. Many of these news stations have web sites with links to updated information on weather and driving conditions. You can also call or go online to find the web site of the department of transportation for your state to get information on the conditions of the local and state roads in your area. Pay attention to advisories telling people ‘stay off the roads,’ due to hazardous conditions and ‘delay’ your travel plans until conditions improve.

If you use common sense driving with snow chains can be safe and help you avoid the slide-off’s that are more common for those driving without snow chains. Just don’t wrongly assume that the snow chains on your vehicle will allow you to traverse up an ice-covered mountain road without difficulty. If the ice is thick enough to prevent your tires from gaining traction, even snow chains won’t keep you on the road.
