Some Tips To Remember About Snow Chains

As with anything you purchase for your car, reading the instructions when you purchase snow chains is important.

One of the highest reasons for snow chain breakage is misuse and misfit, so be sure to purchase the right size snow chains for your vehicle! It’s always smart to pre-fit the snow chains before they are actually needed.

Other tips when you are dealing with snow chains:

  • Install your snow chains on firm, level ground.
  • Have the emergency brake set when you are installing snow chains.
  • Inspect your snow chains once installed for any twists or tangles. Breakage of the chains can occur due to twisted links.
  • Even with snow chains, your car may not have traction. Avoid spinning your tires.
  • Avoid extended periods of driving on bare pavement. Snow chains are not meant to be used on roads without snow.
  • Avoid driving at speeds in excess of 30 MPH. Not only are faster speeds hard on your snow chains, but if the weather warrants snow chains than the conditions are not good enough to be driving at higher speeds.
  • Don’t lock your brakes! Begin breaking sooner when you are on snowy roads.
  • Don’t perform quick maneuvers! When you have snow chains attached, keep your speed under control and steer smoothly. Do everything more gradually when you have your snow chains installed on your tires to allow for maximum traction and safety.
  • Don’t drive on broken snow chains! Remove or replace damaged snow chains before you begin driving or you could seriously damage your vehicle.

Snow chains are unique items and are required in some areas and illegal in others! Be sure to look at your location before deciding on purchasing snow chains for your vehicle. If they are permitted, they can get you and your vehicle through the worst weather imaginable.
